As the game is heavily reliant on graphics to get its message across, the artwork; primarily the cutscenes have to be impressive enough in order to convey the emotion of the moment and to help push the narrative for the understanding of the viewer. The art direction taken from these scenes are clear cut, just like the illustrations of the characters themselves, to distinguish between the gritty style used on the backgrounds of every other scene.
